Kastelli Airport to Knossos, Lasithi & South Crete: Cultural Road Trips

Restored red columns and archaeological ruins at the Palace of Knossos in Crete

Planning update (October 2026): Kastelli's new Heraklion airport is under construction; the current target is November 2028. The airport is not yet available for flights or Comfy car collection. Road access, journey times and pickup arrangements may change before opening.

The inland location of Crete's future Kastelli Airport places travellers close to a fascinating part of the island: Minoan history, mountain villages, vineyards and the landscapes of the Messara plain. A rental car can make it easier to connect several stops in one itinerary, as long as you allow time for narrow roads and opening hours.

These are suggested routes for future travel, not confirmed journey times from an operating airport. See Comfy's Kastelli Airport information page for updates on its planned car-rental service.

Knossos Palace: the classic Minoan visit

Near Heraklion, the Palace of Knossos is one of the most important archaeological sites in Crete. Its courtyards, staircases and restored red columns give visitors a memorable introduction to the Minoan world.

Start early during the warmest months. Check the official opening hours and ticket rules before leaving, and allow time for walking around the archaeological site rather than treating it as a quick photo stop.

Heraklion Archaeological Museum: complete the story

Pair Knossos with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum, where important artefacts from Minoan Crete are displayed. These two attractions work well on the same day, but driving and parking in central Heraklion need separate planning.

If you are spending the day inside the city, compare city parking with local transport rather than assuming you can park next to the museum.

Lasithi Plateau: villages, views and windmills

The windmills and agricultural landscape of the Lasithi Plateau.

At higher altitude, the Lasithi Plateau offers a change of pace: small villages, agriculture, mountain views and the area's historic windmills. The drive involves curves and elevation changes, so generous time allowances make the journey more enjoyable.

The Dikteon Cave is associated with the myth of Zeus. Check access restrictions and current visitor arrangements before including the cave in your plan; mountain-site access can change independently of the road network.

Peza and the vineyard villages

The wine-producing area around Peza gives visitors an introduction to Cretan grapes, olive oil and local food. Wineries may offer booked tastings, but do not assume every estate provides free entry or walk-in visits. Contact the winery directly for hours and reservations.

If anyone in your group is tasting wine, organise a designated driver or another safe way back. A car is useful for reaching rural locations, but drinking and driving do not mix.

South Crete: Phaistos and Matala

A second route could head toward the Messara plain. Visit the Minoan site of Phaistos, then continue to Matala for the beach and its famous caves. This makes a balanced day focused on both archaeology and the south coast.

Distance note: the future airport's approach-road layout is still evolving. Do not rely on the 12 km, 30-minute or other highly specific figures sometimes circulated online until a live road route can be checked.
